Romania’s Balance of Payments and the International Investment Position – Annual Report 2021 presents the evolution of the main components of the balance of payments (the developments in the current account, the share of the foreign direct investments in covering its deficit and the top ten partner countries of Romania from the perspective of international trade - export, respectively import), as well as the structure of Romania's international investment position, which mainly reflects the transactions in the financial account of the balance of payments.
In 2021, Romania's balance of payments displayed a current account deficit of 17,473 million, while the share of this deficit in GDP stood at 7.3%, a 2.4 percentage point increase compared to 2020.
Regarding the evolution of external debt indicators, a 7.8% increase was recorded in the stock of gross external debt compared to the end of the previous year, while the external debt service as a share in GDP stood at 31.9%. Last but not least, Romania's international reserves covered 4.9 months of imports of goods and services.
