Statistical surveys

Data collected by the NBR through statistical surveys are processed and subsequently made available to the general public, as aggregates, in the form of statistical indicators and reports, on the NBR website, in the sections: Publications, Data Sets, Interactive Database (time series).

They are used to produce the statistics that the NBR is responsible for and to prepare in-house analszes and studies to substantiate the decisions of the central bank, and also as data sources for the statistics produced by other national institutions and international organisations.

Statistical surveys carried out in cooperation with the National Institute of Statistics (NIS)

The NBR produces, with the support of economic agents selected by the NIS based on specific sampling criteria, the following statistical surveys:

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT
FDI
INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN SERVICES
ITS
FINANCIAL INFORMATION RELATED TO NON-RESIDENTS
IFRN
ACCESS TO FINANCE OF NON-FINANCIAL CORPORATIONS IN ROMANIA
FCNEF

The statistical surveys Foreign direct investment (FDI), International trade in services (ITS) and Financial information related to non-residents (IFRN) are used by the National Bank of Romania as primary data sources for the production of external sector statistics according to the methodology in the Balance of Payments Manual and International Investment Position, edited by the International Monetary Fund, 6th Edition (BPM6). These surveys provide important information for monetary policy in particular, but also for analysing relations with the outside world, such as globalisation, the relationship between savings and investment at national level, the net lending/borrowing of total economy, identifying economic vulnerabilities in dealing with external shocks, as well as for macroeconomic forecasting. In addition, the balance of payments and the international investment position represent a data source for Financial and Non-Financial National Accounts.

Data collection is done through a dedicated software app - RAPDIR (Ro: RAPortări DIRecte; transl: ”direct reporting”). This software enables information check-up and automatic centralisation of data uploaded by respondents through electronic questionnaires.

Statistical surveys conducted in cooperation with banking institutions

The NBR conducts quarterly surveys addressed to the main banks, representative in relation to the topic of the survey.

BANK LENDING SURVEY

The survey is addressed to the top 10 banks selected based on their market share in terms of loans to companies and households. These institutions account for approximately 80% of the loan stock to these sectors.

SYSTEMIC RISK SURVEY

The survey is sent quarterly to the top 12 credit institutions in the system by asset value. They hold approximately 87% of the total assets of the banking sector. The questionnaire is addressed to persons in managerial positions within the risk management departments of these institutions.
