Between December 2023 and May 2024, the National Bank of Romania Museum hosts the temporary exhibition “King Ferdinand I National Military Museum – 100 Years of Military History” in the Governors’ Gallery of the NBR’s Old Palace.

Created as a journey into the military history of Romania in its modern and contemporary periods, the exhibition captures some of the most important moments in the Romanians’ evolution and consolidation as a European nation. Specifically, through uniforms, decorations, documents, and other valuable objects, visitors get to learn details about Tudor Vladimirescu and the 1821 Revolution, the 1848 Revolution and some of its leaders (Mihail Kogălniceanu, Avram Iancu, Christian Tell, Gheorghe Magheru), the Union of the Principalities and Alexandru Ioan Cuza, and the War of Independence of 1877. Moreover, the public’s attention will undoubtedly be captured by exhibits dedicated to Romania’s Royal Family, as well as the Brătianu family, by the spectacular military flags and standards from the 1872-1941 period, and by the section dedicated to the national decoration system.

The period of World War One is illustrated by showcases dedicated to Romania’s marshals, i.e. Alexandru Averescu and Constantin Prezan, alongside the showcase dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, a monument of which the 100th anniversary was celebrated this past spring. A special section is dedicated also to the military priests of World War One, with uniforms, campaign kits, writing instruments, chalices, and other religious objects.

The exhibition welcomes visitors in free guided tours of the NBR Museum, from Monday to Friday, by prior appointment.
