To celebrate 100 years since Romania gained the first Olympic medal, the National Bank of Romania Museum hosts the temporary exhibition “Another Kind of Treasure: Champions of Romania” from June to December 2024.
Created as an exploration of Romania's Olympic legacy, and organized in partnership with the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee and in collaboration with the Sports Museum, the exhibition highlights some of the most remarkable moments in the country’s sports history. Visitors will have the chance to learn about the achievement of Romania’s rugby team, who earned the nation’s first Olympic medal in 1924, and view unique artefacts associated with this milestone.
The exhibition narrative displays most of the Olympic events where Romanian athletes have won medals over the years, featuring their medals and diplomas, as well as some of the equipment used by these champions. Thus, the exhibition showcases medals won by notable Romanian athletes, including Henri Rang, Iosif Sârbu, Leon Rotman, Dumitru Pârvulescu, Maria Vicol, Gheorghe Fiat, Aurel Vernescu, Gheorghe Berceanu, Cornelia Sideri, Ivan Patzaichin, Alina Dumitru, Dorel Simion, Maricica Puică, Doina Melinte, Gabriela Szabo, Constantina Diță, Iolanda Balaș, Laura Badea, Vilmoș Szabo, Reka Lazăr-Szabo, Mihai Covaliu, Ana-Maria Brânză, Simona Gherman, Horia Tecău, Florin Mergea, Beatrice Câșlaru, Corneliu Ion, Sorin Babii, Violeta Beclea, Marian Oprea, Ionela Târlea, Aneta Pătrășcoiu, Costică Olaru, Elisabeta Lipă, Veronica Cochela, Doina Ignat, Georgeta Andrunache, Claudia Grigorescu, Ioan Pop, Rareș Dumitrescu, Nicu Vlad, Traian Cihărean, Marius Căta-Chițiga, Cristian Gațu, Ștefan Birtalan, and Constantina Diță.
A special section is dedicated to artistic gymnastics, the event where Romanian athletes have won the most medals over the years. Starting with Nadia Comăneci's gold medal in the all-around competition at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, the exhibition displays medals and equipment belonging to Lavinia Miloșevici, Simona Amânar, Andreea Răducan, Sandra Izbașa, Cătălina Ponor, Larisa Iordache, Marius Urzică, and Marian Drăgulescu, as well as the legendary coaches Octavian Bellu and Mariana Bitang.
