The National Bank of Romania Archive contains records generated by this institution since its establishment, in 1880, to date.

Records are grouped by fonds, generating entity, i.e. a NBR division or department, and arranged in chronological order. According to the age of records, the fonds of the National Bank of Romania can be divided into the historical archive (documents issued from 1880 to 1989) and the current archive.

An extensive programme including scanning and microfilming documents in the National Bank of Romania Archive meant to establish back-up fonds for such records is under way. The records processed so far belong to the following fonds: Secretariat, the National Bank of Romania Boards, Personnel and Budget Division, Research Division, Organisation Department.

The records in the National Bank of Romania Archive are used for both scientific and practical purposes so as to elicit the information necessary to provide responses to certain queries. Moreover, the records are put into the scientific circuit by means of the reading room of the National Bank of Romania Archive, allowing the preparation of papers on the history of the National Bank of Romania, of the Romanian banking system and Romania’s economy. The archival materials in the National Bank of Romania Archive are released for research purposes in compliance with Law No. 16/1996 (Articles 20, 22 and Annex 6 thereto regulate the terms and conditions for releasing the records for research purposes).

Experts outside the National Bank of Romania are granted access to the records conditional on the filling-in of an access application form.
