Numismatic issues dedicated to the 150th anniversary since the establishment of the Romanian Academy

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 14 March 2016, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) and a silver coin dedicated to the anniversary of 150 years since the establishment of the Romanian Academy.

The coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) in the set have the following technical characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: goddess Minerva depicted the same as on the coat of arms of the Romanian Academy, overlapping the pediment of the Academy’s headquarters in Bucharest and the inside assembly hall, the coat of arms of Romania, the inscription “ROMANIA”, the face value “100 LEI” and the year of issue “2016”.

Obverse of the silver coin: goddess Minerva depicted the same as on the coat of arms of the Romanian Academy, overlapping the pediment of the Academy’s headquarters in Bucharest and the inside assembly hall, the coat of arms of Romania, the inscription “ROMANIA”, the face value “10 LEI” and the year of issue “2016”.

Obverse of the copper-plated tombac coin: goddess Minerva depicted the same as on the coat of arms of the Romanian Academy, overlapping the pediment of the Academy’s headquarters in Bucharest and the inside assembly hall, the coat of arms of Romania, the inscription “ROMANIA”, the face value “1 LEU” and the year of issue “2016”.

Common reverse: portraits of the founding members of the Romanian Academic Society and the inscriptions “ACADEMIA ROMANA” and “150 DE ANI DE LA INFIINTARE”.

The technical characteristics and description of the silver coin are similar to those of the silver coin included in the three-coin set.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules.

The sets of coins are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is:

  • 150 sets of coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac);
  • 250 silver coins.

The selling prices are:

  • lei 1,970.00, VAT excluded, per set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac), including the leaflet;
  • lei 330.00 lei, VAT excluded, per silver coin, including the leaflet.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins dedicated to the anniversary of 150 years since the establishment of the Romanian Academy are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The sets of coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
