Numismatic issues dedicated to 150 years since the birth of Emil Racoviță

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 6 August 2018, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a silver coin dedicated to 150 years since the birth of Emil Racoviță.

The coin has the following characteristics:

  • Face value: lei 10 ;
  • Metal: silver;
  • Fineness: 999‰;
  • Shape: round;
  • Diameter: 37 mm;
  • Weight: 31.103 g;
  • Quality: proof;
  • Edge: milled.

Obverse: a composition containing, in the foreground, a vintage image of the Belgica ship during its expedition to Antarctica and the inscription “Expeditia navei BELGICA”, and, in the background, a partial image of the Institute of Speleology in Cluj, founded by Emil Racoviță; the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2018”.

Reverse: the portrait of Emil Racoviță, the inscription “EMIL RACOVITA” in an arc, and his birth and death years, “1868” and “1947”.

The silver coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules and are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this issue is 200 silver coins.

The selling price is lei 360.00, VAT excluded, per silver coin, including the leaflet.

The silver coins dedicated to 150 years since the birth of Emil Racoviță are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The silver coins will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
