The National Bank of Romania will put into circulation in 2020 a banknote celebrating a leading female figure - Ecaterina Teodoroiu
31.07.2019
In its meeting of 30 July 2019, the Board of the National Bank of Romania (NBR) decided to put into circulation, in the course of 2020, a banknote showing on one of its sides the portrait of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, the heroine fallen in battle during World War I. The face value of the banknote will be lei 20. This denomination has been used before in the history of Romanian banknote issues and counts among those currently circulating in the euro area.
The choice of Ecaterina Teodoroiu has a double meaning. Specifically, the National Bank of Romania backs the efforts to strengthen gender equality, in line with initiatives of other central banks worldwide. Moreover, the NBR marks once more the anniversary of 100 years since the Great Union, paying tribute to a hero of the Great Unification War.
In the opinion of the NBR Board members, promoting the image of a woman on a banknote in circulation is a step serving a legitimate public interest, namely to bring to the fore female personalities, which has been met with widespread support from the Romanian society. The NBR acquiesced to this endeavour ever since last year, when it chose the image of Queen Maria for the commemorative collector banknote dedicated to the anniversary of 100 years since the Great Union on 1 December 1918.
The NBR will soon make public the design of the banknote, the security and identification features, as well as the exact date of release into circulation.
