Numismatic issue - a mint set encompassing the Romanian coins in circulation and a silver medal dedicated to the anniversary of the International Year of Astronomy

Starting 26 August 2009, the National Bank of Romania will launch, for numismatic purposes, a mint set with the year of issue 2009.

The mint set encompasses the Romanian coins in circulation, with face values of ban 1, ban 5, ban 10 and ban 50, as well as a silver medal dedicated to the anniversary of the International Year of Astronomy.

The silver medal has the following characteristics:

  • shape: round;
  • diameter: 28 mm;
  • metal: silver;
  • purity: 800‰
  • weight: 15.5 grams;
  • quality: proof;
  • edge: smooth.

Obverse: the official logo of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 – AIA 2009 – and the circular inscription “ANUL INTERNATIONAL AL ASTRONOMIEI ROMANIA 2009”.

Reverse: in the middle, an image depicting the cupola of the Astronomic Observatory of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, the telescope of Galileo Galilei, his portrait and the planets of the solar system; on the outer ring, the circular inscription “DESCOPERA SINGUR UNIVERSUL” (The Universe, Yours to Discover).

Both the medal and the coins included in the set are proof quality.

The set comes in a case including a leaflet and the medal and coins are embedded in special cases.

The numismatic issue comprises 1,000 sets.

The selling price is of leu 110.00/set, excluding VAT.

The collector mint set with the year of issue 2009 is put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
