Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 – The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 16 September 2009, the National Bank of Romania is to put into circulation for numismatic purposes a gold coin, a silver coin and a copper-plated tombac coin dedicated to ruler Vlad Ţepeş on the occasion of celebrating 550 years since the first mention in writing of Bucharest, under his rule, on 20 September 1459.

Obverse: in the foreground, the portrait of the ruler Vlad Ţepeş; beneath the portrait, the inscription “VLAD TEPES”; on the left side, the image of a window of the Old Princely Court; below, Romania’s coat-of-arms; on the outside, in the upper part, the inscription “ROMANIA” and beneath it the face value of the coin and the year of issue – 2009.
Reverse: in the middle, the picture of the Old Princely Court; above, the document containing the first mention in writing of Bucharest and the inscriptions “1459” and “BUCURESTI”; below, the inscriptions “PALATUL VOIEVODAL „CURTEA VECHE” on the right side and “550 DE ANI DE LA PRIMA ATESTARE DOCUMENTARA” in the middle.
Each coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by a leaflet featuring an overview of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. The leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania. The coins are displayed in appropriate cases having the NBR logo – BNR – inscribed on the lid.
The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins dedicated to ruler Vlad Ţepeş on the occasion of celebrating 550 years since the first mention in writing of Bucharest, under his rule, on 20 September 1459, are legal tender in Romania.
The selling prices are the following: leu 4,340 (the gold coin), leu 185 (the silver coin) and leu 85 (the copper-plated tombac coin). The price does not include VAT and the price of the case.
