January through April 2006, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of EUR 2,486 million, up 57.2 percent against the same year-ago period, largely due to a wider trade deficit.

Some 91 percent of the current account deficit were covered from inflows of foreign direct investment amounting to EUR 2.3 billion, compared with EUR 1 billion January through April 2005.
Medium- and long-term external debt1
at end-April 2006 stood at EUR 24,502 million, down 0.2 percent against end-2005.
Public and publicly guaranteed external debt at end-April 2006 totalled EUR 10,976 million, accounting for 44.8 percent of medium- and long-term debt, compared with 45.9 percent at end-2005.
Non-publicly guaranteed external debt came in at EUR 12,691 million, up 2.9 percent from end-2005.
