January through April 2005, the balance-of-payments current account exhibited a deficit of EUR 1,391 million, widening by 77.2 percent over the same year-earlier period.

Medium- and long-term external debt1, at end-April 2005 rose 14.2 percent from end-December 2004 to EUR 20,700 million.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt came in at EUR 10,659 million at end-April 2005, accounting for 51.5 percent of medium- and long-term external debt, compared with 55.4 percent at end-December 2004. Non-publicly guaranteed external debt equalled EUR 9,085 million at end-April 2005, up 17.9 percent from end-December 2004.

External debt service ratio2 amounted to 35.3 percent January through April 2005, compared with 22.7 percent in 2004.
