Balance of Payments in January 2005

In January 2005, the balance-of-payments current account exhibited a deficit of EUR 136 million, widening by 67.9 percent year on year.

Medium- and long-term external debt1, at end-January 2005 totalled EUR 18,004 million, up 2.4 percent against end-2004.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt came in at EUR 10,321 million at end-January 2005, holding 57.3 percent of medium- and long-term debt as compared to 57 percent at end-2004. Non-publicly guaranteed external debt equalled EUR 7,683 million at end-January 2005, 1.6 percent higher than at end-2004.

In January 2005, external debt service ratio2 stood at 16.9 percent as compared to 21.9 percent in 2004.

At end-January 2005, import cover3 rose to 6.2 months of imports against 5.2 months of imports at end-2004.
