Balance of Payments in 2004

In 2004, the balance-of-payments current account showed a deficit of EUR 4,402 million, rising 43.9 percent year on year.

Medium- and long-term external debt1, at end-2004 equalled EUR 17,547 million, 11.9 percent higher than at end-2003.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt totalled EUR 10,025 million at end-2004, accounting for 57.1 percent of medium- and long-term debt compared with 61.7 percent at end-2003. Non-publicly guaranteed external debt came in at EUR 7,522 million, up 25.3 percent compared with end-2003.

In 2004, external debt service ratio2 ran at 21.9 percent compared with 20.6 percent in 2003.

At end-2004, import cover3 rose to 5.2 months against 4.1 months at end-2003.
