Balance of Payments in January - September 2003

At end-September 2003, the balance-of-payments current account showed a deficit of EUR 1,647 million, up 61 percent against the first nine months of the previous year.

Medium- and long-term external debt climbed 5.9 percent versus December 2002, totalling EUR 15,474 million at end-September 2003.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt amounted to EUR 9,905 million at end-September 2003, accounting for 64 percent of the medium- and long-term debt against 62.8 percent at end-2002. External private debt came in at EUR 5,569 million, up 2.4 percent from end-2002.
