At end-September 2002, the balance of payments current account posted a deficit of USD 957 million, down 21.9 percent against the same year-ago period.

Medium- and long-term external debt increased by 13 percent versus December 2001 and totalled USD 13,426 million at end-September 2002.

Public and publicly guaranteed debt amounted to USD 8,795 million at end-September 2002, accounting for 65.5 percent of the medium-and long-term debt (against 65 percent at end-December 2001). In the first nine months of 2002, external private debt rose by 11.4 percent, reaching USD 4,631 million at end-September 2002.

At end-August 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 18.5 percent compared with 18.4 percent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.9 months at end-2001 to 4.6 months at end-September 2002.
