Balance of Payments in January - May 2002

At end-May 2002, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of USD 665 million against a USD 1,145 million deficit in the same year-ago period.

Medium- and long-term external debt increased by 11.2 percent against December 2001 and amounted to USD 13,018 million at end-May 2002.

Public and publicly guaranteed debt amounted to USD 8,759 million at end-May 2002, accounting for 67.3 percent of the medium-and long-term debt (against 65.9 percent at end-December 2001). Private external debt rose by 6.7 percent in the first five months of the year, reaching USD 4,259 million at end-May 2002.

At end-May 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 13.8 per cent versus 18.4 per cent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.9 months at end-2001 to 4.6 months at end-May 2002.
