Balance of Payments in January - March 2002

At end-March 2002, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of USD 286 million compared with a USD 405 million deficit in the same year-ago period. This development resulted from the joint action of the following factors: (i) the USD 482 million trade deficit and (ii) the USD 299 million surplus under current transfers.

Medium- and long-term external debt rose by 0.5 per cent against December 2001 and amounted to USD 11,617 million at end-March 2002.

At end-March 2002, public and publicly guaranteed debt ran at USD 7,713 million, accounting for 66.4 per cent of the medium- and long-term debt (against 66.6 per cent at end-December 2001). Private external debt increased by one per cent in the first quarter, reaching USD 3,904 million at end-March 2002.

At end-March 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 14 per cent versus 18.4 per cent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.9 months at end-2001 to 4.2 months at end-March 2002.
