Balance of Payments in January - February 2002

At end-February 2002, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of USD 180 million compared with a USD 338 million deficit in the same year-ago period. This development was attributable to the joint action of the following factors: (i) the USD 319 million trade deficit and (ii) the USD 207 million surplus under current transfers.

Medium- and long-term external debt increased by 0.3 per cent against December 2001 and amounted to USD 11,543 million at end-February 2002.

At end-February 2002, public and publicly guaranteed debt ran at USD 7,710 million, accounting for 66.8 per cent of the medium- and long-term debt (against 66.9 percent at end-December 2001). Private external debt rose by 0.5 per cent, reaching USD 3,833 million in February 2002.

At end-February 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 13.8 per cent versus 18.4 per cent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.9 months at end-2001 to 4.3 months at end-February.
