Balance of Payments in January 2002

At end-January 2002, the balance-of-payments current account exhibited a deficit of USD 59 million compared with USD 107 million at the end of 2001. This development was attributable to the joint action of the following factors: (i) the USD 166 million trade deficit; (ii) the USD 128 million surplus under current transfers.

Medium- and long-term external debt remained broadly unchanged against December 2001 and amounted to USD 11,469 million at end-January 2002.

At end-January 2002 public and publicly guaranteed debt ran at USD 7,679 million, accounting for 67 percent of the medium- and long-term debt (against 67.1 percent at end-December 2001). Private external debt rose 0.5 percent reaching USD 3,790 million in January 2002.

At end-January 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 15.9 percent versus 18.4 percent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.9 months at end-2001 to 4.2 months at end-January.
