Numismatic issue - a gold coin dedicated to the celebration of 1900 years since the first Dacian-Roman war

1. In accordance with the prerogatives conferred upon by Law No. 101/1998, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, starting 4 June 2001, a gold coin with face value of lei 1,000 dedicated to the celebration of "1900 years since the first Dacian-Roman war".

Characteristics:

Obverse: In the middle, the Column of Trajan, the monument raised in Rome, in Trajan's Forum and inaugurated in 113. The column, sculpted by Apollodor of Damascus and his co-workers, presents 124 episodes of the Dacian wars, with more than 2,500 figures on display.

At the left of the column, horizontally, there is the face value of the coin,"1000 LEI", and at the right there are Romania's Coat of arms (centrally) and the inscription "ROMANIA" (following the edge of the coin).

The year of issue "2001" is engraved at the base of the column.

Reverse: The monument Tropaeum Traiani, built in 109 by Trajan at Adamclisi - Constanţa County, to honour the victory, won there in 102, over the Dacians and their barbarian allies.

The two leaders, Emperor Trajan and King Decebalus, are portrayed in two oval insets on the right- and left-hand side of the monument respectively.

The inscription "1900 DE ANI DE LA PRIMUL RAZBOI DACO-ROMAN" is engraved circularly with capital letters.

The years "101-102", when the first Dacian-Roman war was fought, are shown beneath the monument Tropaeum Traiani.

Mintage: 500 pieces for both domestic and international markets. The gold coins are encapsulated in transparent plastic cases and have authentication certificates (in Romanian and English) signed both by the Governor of the National Bank of Romania and the Head Cashier, as well as a prospectus.

The above-described coin is legal tender in Romania. The design of this coin is protected by registration with the State Office of Trademarks (OSIM) in Romania. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be punished accordingly.

2. The National Bank of Romania continues to offer for sale various numismatic articles to numismatists and any other interested persons. With this end in view, starting 4 June 2001, the branches of the National Bank of Romania will be selling a new mint set.

The mint set consists of coins of each denomination in circulation, with face values of lei 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000, issued in 2000, as well as a silver medal dedicated to the anniversary of 120 years since the National Bank of Romania was established.

The coins are minted in a "proof" technique, with the obverse and the reverse oriented in the same direction. For their protection, the coins are packed in cardboard cases on which data, information and images representative for Romania and the monetary institution are printed.

The branches of the National Bank of Romania are in charge of putting into circulation the gold coins of Lei 1, 000 face value and the mint sets.
