In 2000, Romania's external debt posted a 9 percent increase to USD 9,917 million at yearend. The medium- and long-term debt rose by 9.7 percent to USD 9,555 million, whereas short-term debt fell by 6.2 percent to USD 361 million.

Public and publicly guaranteed debt as of 31 December 2000 stood at USD 6,817 million, from USD 6,218 million at end-1999 and accounted for 71.3 percent of the medium- and long-term debt (a percentage similar to that recorded on 31 December 1999). Private debt rose in 2000 by 9.9 percent to reach USD 2,738 million at the end of the year.

Debt service ratio (computed as a ratio between external debt service and exports of goods and services) was 17.9 percent in 2000, compared with 35.9 percent in 1999. The significant improvement of this indicator was due both to the 21.9 percent increase in exports over the year 2000 and to the reduction in the external debt service from USD 3,548 million in 1999 to USD 2,170 million in 2000.
