Monetary policies under scrutiny from entire Europe

05.03.2004

Under the auspices of Banque de France and the European Central Bank, an important meeting took place in Paris on Thursday and Friday. Monetary policies, especially in terms of EU enlargement, were reviewed.

The governors of the central banks of the 15 EU Member States and of the accession countries, including Romania and Bulgaria, attended the meeting. Our country was represented by the NBR governor, Mr. Mugur Isărescu and by deputy governor, Mr. Cristian Popa.

The meeting focused on the main issues of monetary integration, among which the policies specific to the accession period, the exchange rate mechanism (ERM2), and the changeover to the euro. Particular emphasis was laid on the requirement to meet nominal and real convergence. The participants underlined the fact the changeover to the single currency is a relatively long process that requires careful preparation.
