04.12.2006

Pursuant to Art. 18 of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the NBR, starting 1 December 2006, the National Bank of Romania has commenced the withdrawal from circulation of the old notes and coins.

The National Bank of Romania will gradually replace the old notes and coins still in circulation by 31 December 2006.

During 1 - 31 December 2006, the old notes and coins will be accepted for payment by all companies and institutions. These entities must not put them back into circulation and must deposit them with the banks where they have opened accounts.

In addition, the offices of credit institutions must no longer put into circulation the old notes and coins received from individuals, companies and other institutions. Instead, they must deposit them with the NBR branches.

During 1 - 31 January 2007, the old notes and coins that cease to be legal tender as from 1 January 2007 may be exchanged free of charge at the NBR branches in Bucharest, Iaşi, Cluj-Napoca and Timişoara, as well as at the offices of credit institutions and of the State Treasury.

Starting 1 February 2007, the old notes and coins will be converted free of charge, without any time limit, at the NBR branches in Bucharest, Iaşi, Cluj-Napoca and Timişoara, at the counter or by mail.
