Numismatic issue - a silver coin dedicated to the International Year of Chemistry

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, on 6 June 2011, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation a collector silver coin dedicated to the International Year of Chemistry.

The silver coin has the following characteristics:

  • face value: lei 10
  • metal: silver
  • fineness: 999‰
  • shape: round
  • diameter: 37 mm
  • weight: 31.103 g
  • quality: proof
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: a composition showing a partial image of the periodic table of elements, several laboratory vessels, the depiction of a molecule and a microscope; in the upper part, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI” and the coat of arms of Romania.

Reverse: the portrait of the Romanian chemist Costin Neniţescu and the inscription “COSTIN NENITESCU“ in an arc; beneath the portrait, the logo of the International Year of Chemistry 2011; on the right side, the anniversary year “2011“ and a composition suggesting an experiment, the atom symbol and the formulas of two chemical compounds synthesised by Costin Neniţescu; on the rim, the inscription “ANUL INTERNATIONAL AL CHIMIEI“ in an arc.

The silver coins are housed in transparent plastic capsules and are accompanied by leaflets featuring a brief presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.

Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is 500.

The selling price of the silver coin, leaflet included, is lei 420.00 excluding VAT.

The silver coins in the numismatic issue “The International Year of Chemistry” are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The collector silver coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
