Numismatic issue - set of silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the unification of the central political institutions of modern Romania

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, on 28 May 2012, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a set of two silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the unification of the central political institutions of modern Romania: the opening of the first Parliament and the establishment of the first Government.

The two silver coins have the following characteristics:

  • Face value: lei 10
  • Metal: silver
  • Fineness: 999‰
  • Shape: round
  • Diameter: 37 mm
  • Weight: 31.103 g
  • Quality: proof
  • Edge: milled

Obverse 1: the portraits of ruling prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, during whose reign the Parliament of the United Principalities opened its first session, and of metropolitan bishop Nifon, the first Chair of the Parliament, the names of the two personalities, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue, the face value “10 LEI”, and “ROMANIA” inscribed in an arc.

Reverse 1: inside a ring, the 1862 coat of arms of the United Principalities; on the outer ring: “PRIMUL PARLAMENT AL PRINCIPATELOR UNITE - 150 DE ANI” (150 years since the establishment of the first Parliament of the United Principalities); the year “1862”, inscribed in the exergue.

Obverse 2: the portraits of ruling prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, during whose reign the first Government of the United Principalities was established, and of Barbu Catargiu, Prime‑Minister of that government, the names of the two personalities, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue, the face value “10 LEI”, and “ROMANIA” inscribed in an arc.

Reverse 2: inside a ring, the 1862 coat of arms of the United Principalities; on the outer ring: “PRIMUL GUVERN AL PRINCIPATELOR UNITE - 150 DE ANI” (150 years since the establishment of the first Government of the United Principalities); the year “1862”, inscribed in the exergue.

The silver coins in the set are housed in transparent plastic capsules and are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.

Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

This numismatic issue includes 500 mint sets.

The selling price per mint set, leaflet included, is lei 700.00, excluding VAT.

The two silver coins in the set, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the unification of the central political institutions of modern Romania: the opening of the first Parliament and the establishment of the first Government, are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The mint set of two silver collector coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the unification of the central political institutions of modern Romania: the opening of the first Parliament and the establishment of the first Government will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
