The National Bank of Romania will launch, for numismatic purposes, a silver coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the issue of the first postage stamps, referred to as "Bull's Head", in Romania

In accordance with the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 5 May 2008, the National Bank of Romania is to launch for numismatic purposes a silver coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the issue of the first postage stamps, referred to as "Bull's Head", in Romania.

The silver coin has the following characteristics:

  • face value: leu 10;
  • purity: 999/1000;
  • weight: 31.103 g;
  • shape: round;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • quality: proof;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the upper part, to the right, the images of the "Bull's Head" postage stamps with face value of para 54, para 81 and para 108, bordered above and to the right by two lines suggesting the corner of a letter; in the lower part, to the left, Romania's coat-of-arms inside two concentric circles, partly overlapping the images of the stamps, suggesting a postal seal; the inscription "ROMANIA" is engraved between the two circles, above the coat-of-arms; to the left of the coin, the vertical inscription "2008" and in the lower part, the face value, i.e. "10 LEI".

Reverse: the image of the "Bull's Head" postage stamp with face value of para 27, bordered above and to the left by two lines suggesting the corner of a letter; two concentric circles overlap the below right corner of the stamp; between the two circles the inscription "CAP DE BOUR" is engraved, suggesting a postal seal in the middle of which the issue date of the "Bull's Head" postage stamps is inscribed; the date is shown as a fraction - 15/7 (15 July); the vertical inscription "1858" is featured above the postal seal; below the postal seal, the symbol of the EUROPA Programme consisting in issues of numismatic silver coins, and on the outer ring the inscription "PRIMA EMISIUNE DE MARCI POSTALE ROMANESTI".

Each coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by a leaflet in Romanian, English and French. The leaflet comes with an authentication certificate bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania. The coins will be displayed in appropriate cases having the NBR logo -BNR - inscribed on the lid. The numismatic issue comprises 1,000 coins.

The collector coins made of silver in the issue dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the issue of the first postage stamps, referred to as "Bull's Head", in Romania are put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
