Numismatic issue: NBR launches for numismatic purposes, a gold coin, a silver coin and a tombac coin dedicated to Dimitrie Cantemir

In accordance with the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 18 June 2007, the National Bank of Romania is to launch, for numismatic purposes, a gold coin, a silver coin and a tombac coin dedicated to Dimitrie Cantemir - great scholar, historian, philosopher, geographer, ethnologist, musicologist, multilateral personality -, whose educational background, culture and European recognition have hallmarked the Romanian history.

1. The gold coin has the following features:

  • face value: leu 100;
  • shape: round;
  • purity: 900/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 6.452 g;
  • diameter: 21 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "100 LEI", Romania's coat of arms above and the year of issue "2007" and the circular inscription "ROMANIA" below.

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Dimitrie Cantemir; on the outer ring, in the upper part and in the lower part respectively, the circular inscriptions "DIMITRIE CANTEMIR" and "26 octombrie 1673 - 21 august 1723".

2. The silver coin has the following features:

  • face value: leu 5;
  • shape: round;
  • purity: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 15.55 g;
  • diameter: 30 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "5 LEI", Romania's coat of arms above and the year of issue "2007" and the circular inscription "ROMANIA" below.

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Dimitrie Cantemir; on the outer ring, in the upper part and in the lower part respectively, the circular inscriptions "DIMITRIE CANTEMIR" and "26 octombrie 1673 - 21 august 1723".

3. The coppered tombac coin has the following features:

  • face value: leu 1;
  • shape: round;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 23.50 g;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "1 LEU", Romania's coat of arms above and the year of issue "2007" and the circular inscription "ROMANIA" below.

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Dimitrie Cantemir; on the outer ring, in the upper part and in the lower part respectively, the circular inscriptions "DIMITRIE CANTEMIR" and "26 octombrie 1673 - 21 august 1723".

The coins come in transparent plastic capsules, along with brochures describing the numismatic issues in Romanian, English and French. Each brochure will be accompanied by an authentication certificate bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania. The coins will be presented in appropriate cases having the NBR logo - BNR - inscribed on the lid.

The mintage comprises a total of 750 coins, of which 250 pieces for the gold coin, 250 pieces for the silver coin, and 250 pieces for the coppered tombac coin.

The gold, silver and tombac coins dedicated to Dimitrie Cantemir
