Numismatic issue: a mint set including two silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Doctor Gheorghe Marinescu and Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, on 25 November 2013, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a mint set including two silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Doctor Gheorghe Marinescu and Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino.

The coins have the following characteristics:

  • Face value: lei 10
  • Metal: silver
  • Fineness: 999‰
  • Shape: round
  • Diameter: 37 mm
  • Weight: 31.103 g
  • Quality: proof
  • Edge: milled

Obverse, the same for both coins, shows a partial depiction of the building of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, a composition illustrating medical research in Neurology and Microbiology, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2013” and “ROMANIA” inscribed in an arc.

Reverse of the first coin presents the portrait and name of Doctor Gheorghe Marinescu, founding father of the Romanian school of Neurology, and “150 DE ANI DE LA NASTERE” inscribed in an arc..

Reverse of the second coin shows the portrait and name of Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino, founding father of the Romanian school of Microbiology and “150 DE ANI DE LA NASTERE” inscribed in an arc.


The mint sets, with the silver coins housed in transparent plastic capsules, are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.

Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is 500 sets.

The selling price per set of two silver coins, including the leaflet, is lei 590.00 excluding VAT.

The silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Doctor Gheorghe Marinescu and Doctor Ioan Cantacuzino are legal tender in Romania.

The silver coin set will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
