In May 2024, RON loans to non-government sector (68.8% of total) grew by 0.6% month-on-month, whilst foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON (31.2% of total) rose by 0.2%. In year-on-year comparison, loans to non-government sector advanced 5.7%, on the back of the 7.6% increase in RON-denominated loans and the 1.6% rise in foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON.

Balance of payments and external debt – April 2024
In January - April 2024, the current account posted a deficit of EUR 6,576 mill. compared with EUR 5,191 mill. in the same year-ago period. Non-residents direct investment totalled EUR 3,230 mill., compared with EUR 2,408 mill. YoY. LT external debt at end-April 2024 ran at EUR 126,798 mill., up 4.1% against end-2023. ST external debt amounted to EUR 45,089 mill., down 6.7% from end-2023.

International reserves – May 2024
On 31 May 2024, the National Bank of Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR 65,072 million, compared to EUR 62,511 million on 30 April 2024. The gold stock remained steady at 103.6 tonnes. On 31 May 2024, Romania’s international reserves (foreign currencies and gold) stood at EUR 72,269 million, compared to EUR 69,700 million on 30 April 2024.
